Run Sackboy! Run! is the infinite runner game equivalent of a child tripping over their shoelaces – though innocent and endearing, it's not without missteps. And, much like actual running, Run Sackboy! Run! begins to lose its appeal shortly after leaving the gate, proving to be far more enjoyable as a sprint rather than a full marathon.
A spin-off from the beloved LittleBigPlanet franchise, Run Sackboy! Run! is a free-to-play infinite runner title available for iOS, Android, and the Playstation Vita. For those unfamiliar with the concept of an infinite runner, the player is tasked with navigating along the x-axis at increasingly faster speeds, collecting items and currency while avoiding procedurally generated enemies and traps. In the case of Run Sackboy! Run!, the currency (bubbles) is used to unlock new upgrades and costumes, while the items (stickers) can be redeemed to unlock exclusive outfits and items for use in main entries of the series, such as LittleBigPlanet 3.
Developers Sumo Digital and Media Molecule make adequate use of the LittleBigPlanet license, as each area presented in the game – the Gardens, Avalonia, and the Canyons – is believably portrayed as a genuine LittleBigPlanet level. From the level design to the assets and enemies used, Run Sackboy! Run! looks canon. The environments are displayed with a crisp and colorful palette that displays great on the Vita screen, though there are occasional framerate drops upon entering new areas. Controlling the character leaves a little to be desired, however, as the game solely utilizes touchscreen controls, which often feel imprecise due to inputs not registering or mistaking a jump (a single tap) for a dash (a swipe). Rather than allowing the player the option to use button presses, the game's settings allow the player to activate the rear touch pad for use, an option that feels even less precise.
Unfortunately, it quickly becomes apparent that this is a budget title, as there is little variation in enemy designs or traps, and the limited three levels merely loop upon completion. This spin-off also lacks the intrinsic creative charm of LittleBigPlanet. The lack of creation options can be excused; as a free title, none were expected. The lack of heart, however, is a far more damnable offense.

The term “procedurally generated” should be taken lightly as well, as many core elements and layouts of the environment are static and reused throughout subsequent play sessions. Furthermore, whereas infinite runner games such as Jetpack Joyride allow a relatively free spectrum of movement, Run Sackboy! Run! functions more as a traditional platformer, restricting the player to the physics and movement of its parent series. While this serves well to differentiate the game from other infinite runners (or, as billed on the Playstation Blog, “a free-to-play, platform-survival game”), it also significantly raises the game’s difficulty. This, coupled with the aforementioned partial procedural generation of the environments, causes extended game sessions to quickly feel tedious.
Run Sackboy! Run! does offer motivation in the form of unlockable content for LittleBigPlanet 3; however, players who wish to experience Run Sackboy! Run! as a standalone title will find little reward for their efforts. This is further reinforced by the perpetual grind required to unlock everything. Even if a player were to succumb to the temptation of micro-transactions, the largest package of bubbles -- offered for a paltry $33.99 -- is still not enough to unlock everything. Though the price of admission may be low, the price for completion runs high.
Run Sackboy! Run! is an enjoyable distraction, a mediocre game, and a completionist's nightmare.
